What’s Important

Last month, my birth month, ended up with a realization that I became reacquainted with.

As I’m in retail sales, it’s easy to get caught up in striving for certain metrics – dollar amounts, sales totals, units sold, etc.

Sometimes I fall short of objectives – not so much those imposed upon me by others, but those set for myself by myself. Last month was one of those months that in this area of my life I performed less than desired.

But, all else in my life is great. The relationship with my wife and children, my physical health and vitality, my mental health and the desire to learn and keep growing. Yes, all things are interconnected, and the one area falling a little short impacts the other areas. But the error would be to not realize that any one part is not the whole.

We hear (see/read) about people who put too much importance into one area of life to the exclusion of the rest of life. Lucky are those that realize and repair this error before it’s too late. Those that do not are the headlines of today’s news.

I’ve always had a capacity, since early on, to be able to “step back” from my situation and look at things from the outside – at least to a degree. As is the case with last month.

To be aware of the whole of life, even when in the heat of the moment (could be a day, week, month, etc), and take into consideration all the parts of life and not let any one area pull all the others down is a conscious effort that must be practiced daily.
